Clubs & Bars
The best place to go for some music and fun after dark in São Luis in the Reviver area is the centro histórico. There are close to a dozen bars, cafes, and restaurants offering music in the small area in the evening, most of it played live. Most nights of the week, something's happening -- with music usually starting around 8pm and ending around 1am. Thursday through Saturday it really hops, and the music continues past 3am. On the steps in the Beco Caterina Mina, Monteiro's Bar (tel. 098/3221-5998) has live samba Tuesday through Saturday, beginning around 8pm. On Rua Estrela, Antigamente (tel. 098/3232-3964) has live MPB (Brazilian pop) every night, starting early around 6pm. The Roots Bar, Rua da Palma 85 (tel. 098/3221-7580), and Bar do Porto on Rua Trapiche 49 (tel. 098/3221-3749), both offer reggae. Both charge a nominal cover of about R$5 (US$2.50/£1.35).
For DJs and dancing downtown, there's the gay-friendly Metalurgica SLZ, Rua da Palma 196 (tel. 098/3231-8950; www.metalslz.com.br; Fri-Sat 10pm-5am).
Outside of downtown, the Lagoa da Jansen has a number of more mellow music venues, often doubling as restaurants. Kitaro Lagoa (Av. Mario Meireles s/n; tel. 098/3268-6528) has live music -- usually MPB -- every night starting around 9pm. Farther along the lakeshore, Por Acaso (Av. Mario Meireles s/n; tel. 098/3233-5837) is a great casual chopperia offering live music daily at 8pm. Cover is only R$3 (US$1.50/£.80).
Gay & Lesbian Bars -- The Observatório is one of the oldest gay and lesbian clubs in São Luis and is a great place to dance the night away downtown. Rua da Estrela 370A, Beco da Prensa (tel. 098/3222-5151). Open Friday and Saturday 11pm to 6am.
