Getting There

By Plane--Sault Ste. Marie Airport (tel. 705/779-3031; www.saultairport.com) is about a 25-minute drive west of downtown, accessible from the north and east by Highway 17. Major car-rental companies are housed at terminal building near baggage. It's an easy, 15-mile drive to downtown. If you're not renting, three hotels offer separate shuttle buses -- the Best Western, the Water Tower Inn and the Delta Hotel Waterfront, ranging in price from $10-$15 per person, one way; reservations are recommended. Or try one of two limousine services, such as Elite Limo (tel. 705/759-5757). Their rate is $24 per person. Skyline Limousines or Comfort Limousines (tel. 705/942-0500 charges $20 per person, or $35 for two people going to the same address). Taxis are available; expect the fare to run about $32 into downtown.

By Train--Amtrak (tel. 800/USA-RAIL; www.amtrak.com) runs trains to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver from the United States to Canada. Via Rail (tel. 888/VIA-RAIL; www.viarail.ca), Canada's national rail service, runs trains from many locations in Canada, including Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto, but none directly to Sault Ste. Marie. The rail station is not affiliated with Via Rail, but the Algoma Central Railway, 129 Bay St. (tel. 705-946-7300) operates a northern passenger run through the Agawa Canyon that is popular with visitors.

By Car--The principal highway routes into Sault Ste. Marie are Trans Canada Highway 17 from northern Ontario, eastern Ontario and Western Canada; Route 400 to Highway 69 to Trans Canada Highway 17 from Southern Ontario via Toronto (7-8 hours); Interstate 75 from Southwestern Ontario or the United States.

Getting Around

For taxi service, call the Checker Cab Company (tel. 705/942-3600); North South East West Delivery (tel. 705/254-7343); or 7500 Taxi (tel. 705/945-7500). The meter starts at $2.75 and runs $1.60 per kilometer. There is also a "Bridge Bus" that runs between Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and its sister city in Michigan.

Emergency and urgent-care services are available at Sault Area Hospital, 750 Great Northern Rd. (tel. 705/759-3434; www.sah.on.ca). A Shoppers Drug Mart (tel. 705/949-2143; www.shoppersdrugmart.ca), which the locals call "Shoppers," open until midnight, is located at 44 Great Northern Rd., in the Cambrian Mall.
