Emergencies -- Dial tel. 911 for police, ambulance, or fire emergencies.

Hospitals -- There are 24-hour emergency-room services at Candler General Hospital, 5353 Reynolds St. (tel. 912/819-6000), and at Memorial Medical Center, 4700 Waters Ave. (tel. 912/350-8000).

Newspapers -- The Savannah Morning News is a daily filled with information about local cultural and entertainment events. The Savannah Tribune and the Herald of Savannah are geared to the African-American community.

Post Office -- Post offices and sub-post offices are centrally located and open Monday to Friday 8am to 4:30pm. The main office is at 3601 Montgomery St. (tel. 912/234-8935).

Safety A-- lthough it's reasonably safe to explore the Historic and Victorian districts during the day, the situation changes at night. The clubs along the riverfront, both bars and restaurants, report very little crime. However, muggings and drug dealing are common in the poorer neighborhoods of Savannah.

Taxes -- Savannah has a 6% sales tax. It tacks a 6% accommodations tax (a room or occupancy tax) on your hotel bill.
