Though the views from its windows might be uninspired, the East Bay is conveniently located near the bars and attractions of the riverfront. It was built in 1853 as a cotton warehouse; green awnings and potted geraniums disguise the building's once-utilitarian design. A cozy lobby contains Chippendale furnishings and elaborate moldings. The rooms have queen-size four-poster beds and reproductions of antiques. The hotel frequently houses tour groups from Europe and South America. In the cellar is Skyler's (tel. 912/232-3955), an independently managed restaurant specializing in European and Asian cuisine.
