Frommer's Review
Savannah's largest hotel was opened late in 1999 in a 16-story blockbuster format that dwarfs the city's existing B&Bs. It rises somewhat jarringly from what were until the late 1990s sandy, scrub-covered flatlands on the swampy, rarely visited far side of the river from Savannah's historic core. Conceived as part of a massive resort development project, it derives the bulk of its business from corporate groups who arrive for large conventions throughout the year. It's the largest of the four large-scale hotels that dominate the city's convention business, yet despite a worthy collection (more than 200 pieces) of contemporary art that accents the labyrinth of high-ceilinged public rooms here, there's something just a bit sterile, even lifeless, about this relatively anonymous blockbuster hotel. Compounding the problem is its isolated position, both geographically and emotionally, from the bustle, grace, and charm of central Savannah -- this in spite of cross-river shuttle ferries that deposit clients into the center of the River Street bar and restaurant frenzy. The most elaborate guest rooms are on the two top floors and contain extras and comforts designated as Club Level. Otherwise, rooms are comfortable but bland, outfitted in pale colors and conservative furnishings.
