Getting To Savusavu -- Air Fiji and Sun Air fly from both Nadi and Suva to Savusavu. Their flights between Nadi and Taveuni usually stop here briefly, so don't let your travel agent send you all the way back to Nadi in order to get to Taveuni. The tiny Savusavu airstrip is on Vanua Levu's south coast. The hotels send buses to meet guests who have reservations.
Ferries also come up here, including the Adi Savusavu from Suva. From Savusavu, a bus goes to Buca Bay on Vanua Levu's eastern end, where a small ferry crosses the Somosomo Strait to Waiyevo on Taveuni.
Getting Around Savusavu -- Some 30 taxis -- an incredible number for such a small place -- gather by the market in Savusavu when they're not hauling passengers. The cars of Paradise Cab (tel. 885 0018 or 956026) and Michael's Taxi (tel. 995 5727) are air-conditioned. Fares from Savusavu are F$4.50 (US$2.70) to the airstrip, F$7 (US$4.20) to Namale Resort, F$12 (US$7) to Koro Sun Resort, and F$6 (US$3.60) to the Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort on Lesiaceva Point.
Local buses fan out from the Savusavu market to various points on the island. Most of them make three or four runs a day to outlying destinations, but ask the drivers when they will return to town. The longest runs should cost no more than F$6 (US$3.60), with local routes in the F55¢ to F$1 (US33¢-US60¢) range.
You can rent mountain bikes from Eco Divers-Tours (tel. 885 0122), opposite Waitui Marina. They cost F$15 (US$9) for a half day, F$25 (US$15) for a full day.
