Frommer's Review

This joint venture between the deluxe Post Ranch Inn of Big Sur, California, and Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the late Jacques Cousteau, looks like an old-time Fijian village set in a flat palm grove beside the bay on Lesiaceva Point. This "environmentally correct" resort is great for adults and especially for families, since its educational Bula Camp is the South Pacific's best program for children.

Reception and the resort's bar are under a large thatch roof built like a chief's bure (bungalow), and the dining room is covered by a taller roof, constructed to resemble a priest's bure. These impressive buildings sit next to a horizon pool just steps from one of the better beaches in the area. The large, luxurious thatch-roof guest bungalows have ceiling fans to augment the natural breezes flowing through floor-to-ceiling wooden jalousie windows that make up the front and rear walls. Most have porches strung with hammocks. Sitting by themselves at the point, five split-level units are more spacious and private; they are for adults only except during Easter, July, August, and Christmas. A new luxurious honeymoon unit has a spa tub in its large outdoor bathroom; needless to say, it's reserved for adults all the time. Some but not all units here have phones.

A host of watersports includes snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, and scuba diving. The resort also offers environmentally oriented activities such as visits to rain and mangrove forests. An on-site marine biologist gives lectures and leads bird-watching expeditions and visits to Fijian villages. You can scuba dive with guides skilled in marine biology. The resort has a custom-built dive boat that's capable of reaching the famous Namena Reef, which surrounds Moody's Namena, in about 1 hour.
