Bed & Breakfasts in the Galilee
One of the great pleasures of visiting the Galilee is getting closer to the people and history of the region. You do this by skipping hotels in favor of these alternative accommodations:
* The Kibbutz Country Lodgings: These are the less-expensive list of kibbutz accommodations compiled by the Kibbutz Hotel Chain office. They’re less fancy than those in the more upmarket Kibbutz Hotels, but they’re adequate, often in beautiful locations, and give you a closer look at kibbutz life than the more insulated Kibbutz Hotels. At some kibbutzim, the rooms are in special guest buildings; in others, you get an empty kibbutz member’s room or apartment that has been especially set up for visitors. Tip: There are often special deals for visitors, so do ask before booking.
* Accommodations in Israel—B&Bs, Country Lodging, Rural & Agro Tourism (www.zimmeril.com). This is the pre-eminent source for rural tourism across a wide-spectrum of accommodations types. You might find yourself staying in a private home, with the family on site (and serving you delicious breakfasts each morning), at a kibbutz, or in a fancy B&B. Check the site for options.
* Hostels in Israel (www.hostels-israel.com). This is a network of 20 very good, unusual hostels throughout Israel, including the Galilee and the Golan.
All tourist information offices in major cities (including those in Tiberias, Haifa, and Safed) now are equipped with computers that let you access the current lists of bed-and-breakfast facilities available throughout the Galilee. You can telephone for reservations ahead of time, or play things by ear when you arrive in Israel.
