The main Catholic church in the country, Myeongdong Cathedral is a surprise -- a Gothic structure in the middle of Seoul. Construction on the building was started in 1892 and finished in 1898, on the spot where the first Catholics gathered in 1784. In this structure of brick with stained glass, the basement floor houses the remains of the Korean Catholic martyrs. Masses are held daily, but an English-language service takes place Sundays at 9am.
