There are various places at the harbor to grab a sandwich or other quick meal on the way out to sea; they change too frequently for me to include them here. Downtown, the Ranting Raven, 228 4th Ave. (tel. 907/224-2228), is a great little gift and coffee shop serving homemade pastries and light lunches, open April through Christmas. Art shows open on the first Friday of the month through the visitor season, and the shop carries locally crafted jewelry.

For dessert, Seward also has a delightful old-fashioned confectioner, Sweet Darlings, 209 4th Ave. (tel. 907/224-3011; www.sweetdarlings.com), with lots of candy, fudge, taffy, gelato, and such treats, in one of the downtown's historic storefronts.
