Frommer's Review
Tired of wandering around Old Town? This two-story dumpling restaurant just west of the Bridge of Nine Turnings (Jiu Qu Qiao) would be the ideal place to take a load off and refortify with some of Shanghai's most famous snacks if it weren't always jammed to the rafters with scores of liked-minded tourists. What they all come for is the award-winning Nanxiang xiaolong (¥8/$1 for a steamer of 16 dumplings), steamed pork dumplings with delicious broth that squirts all over the moment you bite into the wrapper. Impossibly long lines form for the takeout counter on the first floor where glass windows allow you to watch the cooks at work. Three dining rooms on the second floor offer a greater choice of snacks, including spring rolls with crab stuffing and salty cashew nut crisps. There's a picture menu to help in ordering; otherwise, just point or wait for help, which may be a while coming.
