Hot Pot King ReviewUnlike most hot pot restaurants, which are packed, chaotic, and decor-free, Lai Fu Lou provides some of the most elegant hot pot dining in town. Decor is sleek, with soft gray chairs and dark brown wooden tables spaced far apart, affording diners some welcome privacy. Your biggest decision will be to pick your soup base: There's a wide variety here from which to choose, including a special chicken soup stock, fish, or pig bone soup. Many folks opt for the yuanyang version, which contains both a potent spicy stock and a more benign, pork-based broth. Besides all the usual meat and vegetable ingredients, the restaurant also specializes in handmade yuwan (fish balls) and danjiao (egg-wrapped dumplings). Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
