Pacific Hotel (Jinmen Dajiudian) -- Just east of the Park Hotel, the three-star Pacific Hotel began as the China United Assurance Company in 1926. The hotel underwent renovation in the late 1990s, preserving its striking colonial portico and small but ornate lobby with coffered ceilings and carved columns in early Italian Renaissance style. It's a fine building but there's a whiff of staleness about the place and the staff appears a little forlorn, though they try their best. Guest rooms facing Nanjing Lu (¥1,000/$125) have wooden floors and old furniture, while those in the ugly modern annex in the back (¥800/$100) sport carpets and the same dull wooden furniture. Satellite television appears limited to Chinese stations. While services and amenities are just average, the location is great, as are room rates if you bargain hard.
