Okura Garden Hotel Shanghai Review

Once the top hotel in the French Concession, the five-star Japanese-managed Okura was built in 1990 on the site of the 1920s French Club and Cercle Sportif. The fine Art Deco features of the original structure have been preserved in its east lobby and grand ballroom with its gorgeous elliptical stained-glass ceiling. As well, the sprawling lawns with the gazebo were once the strolling grounds for Mao Zedong. Recently renovated rooms are of average size, with marble bathrooms that contain automated bidets. The Okura lacks the latest high-tech in-room gadgets of newer hotels, and it rather ungenerously charges guests staying in standard rooms a small fee to use the pool and health club (free for executive-level rooms), but the friendly and highly efficient staff does their best to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

Facilities:
5 restaurants, 3 bars; babysitting; concierge; executive-level rooms; health club w/Jacuzzi and sauna; indoor pool; 24-hr. room service; 2 lighted outdoor tennis courts

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
