Built in 1990 on the site of the 1920s French Club and Cercle Sportif, the five-star Japanese-managed Okura Garden Hotel has preserved the Art Deco features of the original structure in its east lobby and grand ballroom with its gorgeous elliptical stained-glass ceiling. To the south, the sprawling lawns with the gazebo were once the strolling grounds for Mao Zedong. The Japanese-managed 34-story tower is impeccably maintained and elegant throughout. Standard rooms have been undergoing renovations in the last few years, and while a little small, are perfectly comfortable with all the modern amenities. There's even an automated heated bidet in the bathroom! Service is highly efficient.
