Jin Jiang Hotel ReviewThe Jin Jiang Hotel opened its doors in 1929 as the Cathay Mansions, but is best remembered as the location for the signing of the Shanghai Communique by President Nixon and Zhou Enlai in 1972, reestablishing U.S.-China relations. Today's complex includes: the 1929 North Building (Beilou or the Cathay Building), remodeled as a five-star hotel; the central Grosvenor House (1931), with its facade an imitation of the Barclay-Vesey Building in New York City, redone as a five-star all-suite deluxe hotel; and the old South Building, most recently renovated in 2005 into another five-star outfit (Cathay Garden). The Grosvenor House contains a presidential suite with Chairman Mao's desk and easy chair (with a concealed compartment on the right side for a pistol). The Art Deco rooms in the North Building were renovated in 2009 and have high ceilings and modern furnishings. Service, still lagging behind the international chains, is adequate though hardly exemplary. Staff still struggles occasionally with English. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
