Always considered one of Shanghai's top hotels, the five-star Shangri-La upped the ante even more in 2005 with the opening of its gorgeous new 36-story Tower Two. The owners have spared no expense in making the new glass tower as ridiculously luxurious as possible, adding a slew of trendy designer restaurants and bars, the exquisite Himalayan-themed Chi spa, and a second health club and indoor pool. Not only is the Shangri-La currently the biggest and boldest hotel in town, it has the best location in Pudong, with unbeatable views of the Bund across the river. With size, of course, comes loss of intimacy and some confusion -- there is a bewildering number of room categories between the original 28-story Tower One and Tower Two -- but these are minor complaints in the face of such opulent luxury. All Tower Two guest rooms are spacious and superbly appointed with more amenities than you know what to do with, including DVD players, fax machines, and 32-inch LCD TVs. Tower One guest rooms are equally spacious if not as elegant and well stocked, though the Bund-view rooms are always in demand. There are plans to upgrade Tower One rooms in phases. To top it off, staff is exceedingly friendly and the service is of a high international caliber.
