Not your dowdy functional Howard Johnson back home, Shanghai's version is a modern 27-story tower just south of the new Century Square (Shiji Guangchang) on the Nanjing Lu pedestrian mall and with easy access to the Bund. Rated five stars, though lacking the excitement and luxury of the top hotels in this category, the hotel has rooms furnished with redwood furniture, comfortable beds with down bedding, robes, and full amenities. Marble bathrooms are large and clean. Service is friendly enough, if a little tentative.
