Frommer's Review
Right in the heart of the French concession, this pleasing 1930s colonial-style hotel is located on the grounds of the former Morris Estate. Owner of the North China Daily News, the oldest English-language newspaper in China, Morris also bred greyhounds, which he would race at the dog track located just behind his compound. Today, a number of faux "old" houses have been added to the four original villas, and this grand estate occupying a whole city block is now also home to a number of top restaurants and bars including Face, Lan Na Thai, and Hazarra. The well-manicured lawns are delightful to stroll, though you'll likely have to share them with scads of wedding couples posing for photographs. Guest rooms, located in the largest of the original villas, are comfortable enough, with firm beds with fresh soft linens. Ask for a garden-view room. The facilities and the service may not be the finest for what you're paying, but the overall atmosphere of colonial Shanghai, at least the refined version of it, is unbeatable.
