Run by the same folks at the Ruijin Hotel, this villa is a more peaceful and possibly nicer option than the Ruijin. Also known as the Marshall House for American general George Marshall who stayed here between 1945 and 1949 when he was mediating between Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek, this magnificent mansion, originally built in 1920, was one of many homes of Jiang Qing (also known as Mme. Mao) between 1949 and 1976. Dining options and facilities are fewer than at the Ruijin, though guests can use the pool and business center in the new wing catering only to long-term guests. No loss considering that the old mansion, with its dark wood paneling, grand circular stairwell, and large and comfortable rooms (now carpeted and adorned with modern furniture), is where you want to be. The grounds are some of the quietest you'll find in central Shanghai.
