Park Hyatt Shanghai ReviewPark Hyatt Shanghai Shanghai Baiyue Jiudian [SS] -- The Park Hyatt Shanghai is scaling new heights of luxury. Occupying the 79th to 93rd floors of the 101-story, 492m (1,614-ft.) Shanghai World Financial Center, this exclusive Hyatt brand now lays claim to the world's tallest hotel. Designed to be a cool refuge (in temperature and style) from the hustle and bustle of Shanghai, the hotel has a direct elevator that whisks guests up to the 87th-floor lobby. Happily, a damper has been installed on the 90th floor, which should greatly reduce if not eliminate entirely the occasional swaying that guests staying at the neighboring and similarly high-flying Grand Hyatt would sometimes feel on a windy day. Guest rooms, reached via dimly lit vaultlike hallways, are the largest in the city (55sq. m/592 sq. ft. and up), and some of the most comfortable with high ceilings, daybeds, DVD players, iPod docking stations, and flatscreen plasma TVs. Bathrooms are in a courtyard style with large rain showers and separate powder rooms, but the toilet lid that lifts automatically is perhaps trying a little too hard. Service is fine if not particularly memorable, but the views are brilliant when you're not socked in by clouds or smog. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
