Skyland Lodge Review

Skyland was built by naturalist George Freeman Pollock in 1894 as a summer retreat almost atop Stony Man Mountain, the highest point on the Skyline Drive at 3,680 feet. The main building is smaller and less charming than Big Meadow Lodge's. The resort offers rooms in the main lodge as well as in rustic wood-paneled cabins and motel-type accommodations spread out over its 52 acres. Some of the buildings are dark-brown clapboard, others are fieldstone, and all nestle among the trees. More rooms have wonderful views than at Big Meadow, but again, tell the reservations clerk you want a view. The most panoramic views are from the Shenandoah building, whose air-conditioned rooms have TVs. More rooms also have air-conditioning and TVs here, too. The main building's dining room has a view, and it offers the same fare as at Big Meadows. There's a fully stocked taproom here, too, and the park's only stables are nearby.

Restaurant; bar

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
