Swimming, hill climbing, horseback riding, fishing, and even windsurfing on Lake Silvaplana are options in the summer. A range of cross-country trails and hiking paths are situated around the lake of Silvaplana.
Whether you're a skier, a mountaineer, a nature lover, or just a sightseer, you may want to visit Corvatsch. From Silvaplana, go across the narrow neck of water where Lake Champfèr and Lake Silvaplana join and take an aerial cable car at Surlej. In just 15 minutes you'll reach the mountain station, from which you have a view of the lakes, meadows, forests, and villages of the Upper Engadine. From the lookout terrace, you take in a panorama of what appears to be an infinity of mountain peaks, with the giant glacier of the Bernina group seemingly close enough to touch.
From December to May, skiers are presented with nearly 80km (50 miles) of ski runs covered with deep, powdery snow, while in the summer you can ski on the granular ice of the glacier. Ski lifts, the most visible of which is the Corvatsch Bergbahn (tel. 081/838-73-73), carry skiers to the glacier throughout the year. It charges round-trip fares of 38F ($31/£16) for adults and 19F ($16/£8.30) for children.
The town's ski school, Skischule Corvatsch (tel. 081/828-86-84), which is open only from December to May, charges 85F ($70/£36) per hour for private lessons, or 48F ($39/£20) per person for group lessons that last for a full day.
