The Shangri-La is a lovely place, with strolling gardens and an outdoor pool paradise that are great diversions from the hustle and bustle all around. Maybe that's why visiting VIPs like George Bush (both of them), Benazir Bhutto, and Nelson Mandela have all stayed here.
The hotel has three wings: The Tower Wing is the oldest, housing the lobby and most of the guest rooms, which were completely redone. Instead of the usual square-block hotel rooms of typical city hotels, Shang's added unusual angles and curves, sophisticated contemporary furnishings, and a refreshing wall of glass blocks that welcomes natural light into the giant bathroom and dressing area. Balconies were melded into the rooms to become reading nooks. The Garden Wing surrounds an open-air atrium with cascading waterfall and exotic plants. Rooms here are more resortlike, with natural textured wall coverings, tweed carpeting, and woven bedspreads. These larger-size rooms also have bougainvillea-laden balconies overlooking the tropical landscaped pool area. The exclusive Valley Wing has a private entrance and very spacious rooms (I'd say the largest rooms in Singapore), linked to the main tower by a sky bridge that looks out over the hotel's 6 hectares (15 acres) of landscaped lawns, fruit trees, and flowers. These rooms, with large bathrooms and dressing areas, reopened after a massive-scale renovation. The new decor reflects the exclusivity of the facility, an Oriental sanctuary. These rooms come with personalized butler service, personalized stationery, access to complimentary airport limousine service, and a champagne bar in the lobby.
