The Goose of Honor -- The tip of the Scandinavian peninsula was where Selma Lagerlöf's The Wonderful Adventures of Nils began. This story of a hero who travels on the back of a wild goose has been translated into all major languages. In reality, however, the web-footed, flat-billed, large-bodied geese of Skåne are tame and never travel far from home. No doubt they regret this on November 10, when Scanians celebrate the almost-sacred bird with a gargantuan dinner -- one enjoyed by everyone but the geese.
