Sherwood Inn

Right in the heart of Skaneateles, this cozy and sensitively restored inn on the main drag, once a stagecoach stop in the early 1800s, has wide-open lake views from its porch. You'll find hardwood floors in the hallways, four-poster and canopy beds in the rooms, and a genteel, lived-in, old-money feel. Accommodations, many with lake views, are all spacious, uniquely decorated, and delightful; some are very feminine in toile, some are English country, while others are library-like and masculine. My favorite is the swank and romantic Red Room (no. 31), with a fireplace, a Jacuzzi, and a funky light fixture. The elegant restaurant has a beautiful porch with unequaled lake views, and a clubby tavern, a Euro-style pub with wooden booths and green leather chairs. If it's full, you may want to inquire about the nearby Packwood House (www.packwoodhouse.com; $180-$225 double), managed by Sherwood but with a decidedly more corporate look and feel.
