In 1889, when Black River's port was one of the most important in Jamaica, a Scottish merchant imported most of the materials for the construction of this white-sided manor house. Today the battered but much-enlarged house functions as a very basic hotel. Rooms are clean, stripped down, and simple, usually with mahogany furniture made by local craftspeople. The hotel has gradually added five small houses filled with suites; these come with either a king-size bed or twin beds, and the units each also have a fold-out couch, are air-conditioned, have cable TVs and phones, and either patios or verandas. Most rooms come with a tub and shower; the rest only have showers.
