In Port aux Basques

About a half-dozen hotels and B&Bs offer no-frills shelter to travelers at Port aux Basques. The two largest are Hotel Port aux Basques, Route 1 (tel. 877/695-2171 or 709/695-2171), and St. Christopher's Hotel, Caribou Road (tel. 800/563-4779 or 709/695-3500). Both might be described as "budget modern," with clean, basic rooms in architecturally undistinguished buildings. I'd give St. Christopher's the edge since it's located on a high bluff with views of the town and the harbor. Both have around 50 rooms and charge C$75 to C$150 (US$68-US$135/£38-£75) for a double.

In Corner Brook

Corner Brook is home to several convenient chain motels. Among others, you'll find the Mamateek Inn, 64 Maple Valley Rd. (tel. 800/563-8600 or 709/639-8901), near the tourist information booth, and the Greenwood Inn & Suites, 47 West St. (tel. 800/399-5381 or 709/634-5381), which is within walking distance of the city's best restaurant ; it recently changed hands and was upgraded by the new owners. Double rooms go for C$90 up to C$120 (US$81-US$108/£45-£60) at the Mamateek, and up to C$195 (US$176/£98) at the Greenwood.

Camping is offered on the north banks of the Humber at Kinsmen Prince Edward Park (tel. 709/637-1580), with 80 sites spread along a bluff from which you can often spot osprey and bald eagles. Both fully serviced (C$20/US$18/£10) and unserviced sites (C$15/US$14/£7.50) are available. Exit the Trans-Canada Highway at Marble Mountain and follow Route 440 until you see the signs. It's about 10 minutes' drive from downtown. The campground is open June to mid-September.

In Deer Lake

Blow Me Down Provincial Park (tel. 709/681-2430) has camping for C$13 (US$12/£6.50) per site.
