It's amazing how even the lowliest joints on St. Barts have some kind of glittery élan. But the no-frills Gustavia "snack bar" known as Le Select, opened by Marius Stakelborough in 1949, is in no danger of trending upscale. This beloved burger palace and bar is both hippie saloon and family-friendly eatery, with plastic chairs even. Le Select may not officially have been the inspiration for Jimmy Buffet's “Cheeseburger in Paradise," but it's been dining out on that legend for a good part of its existence. (And Sir Jimmy happily shows up to play for the bar's every major milestone, although Stakelborough won't be there to join in—he passed away in 2020 at the age of 97.) You can sip Ti punch or cold Carib beer and play dominoes under shade trees in the flag-strewn garden.
