Nightlife

You can start by taking a walk along the promenade to watch the sunset. Around place Louis-XIV, you'll find a hotbed of activity at the cafes and bars.

A fun spot in the center of town is Pub du Corsaire, 16 rue de la République (tel. 05-59-26-10-74), for unpretentious merrymaking accompanied by copious amounts of alcohol and rock 'n' roll. For dancing to recorded music, many night owls head northeast of town along RN10 to the neighborhood known as A Côte.

No one ever implied that to be Basque meant being celibate, or even particularly faithful to the concept of hearth and home. The hot pickup joint that's crowded with scantily clad and sometimes nubile wannabe vedettes, starlettes, and princesses is Le Brouillarta, promenade de Jacques Thibaud (tel. 05-59-51-29-51). There's a view of the sea, a crowd of tourists and locals whose age ranges from 18 to around 55, platters of Basque food priced at 16€ to 24€ ($23-$35) per main course, and a separate bar area where, frankly, no one really cares if you ever migrate onward to dinner at all. It's positioned about 3 blocks from the rue de la République, with a view of the sea and, let's say, a reputation as a place where you can make friends if you're so inclined.
