Frommer's Review
This place is in a neck-to-neck competition with St. Michael's Manor , though Sopwell has more facilities. A private mansion from the days of George III, at one time it belonged to Lord Louis Mountbatten and has seen its share of royal heads. Converted into a hotel of taste, charm, and character, it occupies nearly a dozen acres 3km (2 miles) southeast of the city center. Avoid it if it's hosting a conference, but at other times you can enjoy the grace of an English country house. From the drawing room to the library, public rooms are elegant and comfy. Some of the bedrooms are equipped with four-poster beds and have a traditional feel, whereas others are more contemporary. Regardless, the decor is tasteful, rather chic, and handsomely coordinated.
Facilities:
2 restaurants; 2 bars; indoor heated pool; gym; spa; salon; room service; babysitting; laundry service

| 2 stars | Frommer's Very Highly Recommended | |
| 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
