Lanzerac Hotel & Winery

Considered one of the top spots in the Winelands, this remains a gracious historic manor, with outlying rooms and suites situated amid rolling vineyards and soaring peaks of heaven-sent Jonkershoek Valley. Recently upgraded, the entry-level "classic" rooms come with antique facsimiles and plenty of comfortable touches, but for real privacy, opt for a huge suite out in the gardens (some have a pool). Laid-back, child-friendly, and sporting vast, rollicking lawns; a newly upgraded spa; and (slightly lackluster) old-fashioned service, the Lanzerac is the classic model against which to compare the more up-to-date sense of luxe at brand-new Asara. Prices are pretty much on a par, so your choice will ultimately come down to taste. For my money, I prefer the casual embrace of Hawksmoor's shabby-chic good looks and authentic hospitality.
