Stellenbosch's first Relais & Châteaux hotel benefits from probably the most fantastic location and unfettered views in this part of the Winelands -- surrounded by 180 hectares of farmland, two-thirds dedicated to vines. Most guestrooms -- and both restaurants -- enjoy sweeping vistas across a sloped vineyard and distant Stellenbosch and Helderberg Mountains. Sunset, best enjoyed on your private terrace overlooking the dam, is magical. Another obvious highlight here is the huge, immaculate, unfussy bedrooms -- ask for a deluxe room in the main building (those in the annex wing feel a little cut off) -- and the access they afford to a vast, elegant estate. Asara suffers slightly because it is so new and is still easing into its skin.
