Golf -- Don't miss New Zealand's only registered 6-hole golf course at Ringaringa Heights, overlooking Ringaringa Beach. Greens fees are NZ$10 for two people, which may well make it the cheapest golf course in the world. Club rentals are available at Stewart Island Flight Depot (tel. 03/219-1090) for NZ$5.
Hunting -- The elusive American whitetail deer was liberated on Stewart Island in the early 1900s and now provides sport for the energetic hunter. Hunting parties may spend up to 2 weeks camped in isolated places during the winter "roar." Contact Southern Isle Charters (tel. 03/219-1133; lhhansen@xtra.co.nz) to join a party.
Kayaking -- Ruggedy Range Wilderness Experience (tel. 03/219-1066; www.ruggedyrange.com) offers six area coastal and river kayaking adventures, including multi-activity options, priced from NZ$175 to NZ$950 per person.
Skin Diving & Fishing -- You'll immediately notice how clear the seawater is around Stewart Island, making it ideal for diving. Join Richard Squires of Lo Loma (tel. 03/219-1141; www.loloma.co.nz) for half- or full-day fishing and diving charters. Herbie Hansen of Southern Isle Charters (tel. 03/219-1133) offers diving and fishing charters.
