Lying between two mountains, the Wilder Kaiser and the Kitzbüheler Horn, this village is both a summer vacation center and a winter ski resort. In summer, it has a busy open-air swimming pool, and in winter, the good ski runs appeal to both beginners and experts. A ski school and ski kindergarten, plus cross-country ski trails, add to the attractions. Bars in the snow are also popular.
Many old Tyrolean houses fill the little town with charm, and some of the traditional inns have frescoed exteriors.
The Kaisergebirge, near St. Johann, also draws many mountain climbers.
