Budget travelers should wander up the city's hillside to the intersection of LaMarchant and Freshwater streets. Within a 2-block radius, you'll find numerous options for cheap eats at both eat-in and takeout establishments.
One local favorite is Ches's Fish and Chips, at 9 Freshwater Rd. (tel. 709/726-2373), which has been serving up pleasingly unhealthy portions of fried fish, chicken wings, and burgers since 1958. Amazingly, it's open as late as 2am even on weekdays -- and they deliver, too. For good coffee right in town, head for HavaJava at 216 Water St. (tel. 709/753-5282).
