Frommer's Review

Conceived by megamillionaire Laurance S. Rockefeller in 1956, this is the Caribbean's first eco-resort. Though it's long been one of the premier resorts of the Caribbean, Caneel Bay is definitely not one of the most luxurious. A devoted fan once told us, "It's like living at summer camp." That means no phones or TVs in the rooms. Nevertheless, the movers and shakers of the world continue to descend on this place, though younger people tend to head elsewhere. To attract more families, young children are now allowed here. Go to Westin Resort St. John for glitz and glitter; head here for a touch of class.

The resort lies on a 170-acre portion of the national park, offering a choice of seven beaches. Surrounded by lush greenery, the main buildings are strung along the bays, with a Caribbean lounge and dining room at the core. Other buildings housing guest rooms stand along the beaches. Try to get one of the five rooms in cottage no. 7, overlooking two of the most idyllic beaches, Scott and Paradise. Most rooms, however, are set back on low cliffs or headlands. The decor within is understated, with Indonesian wicker furniture, hand-woven fabrics, sisal mats, and plantation fans. The limber staff here guides interested guests through yoga and stress-management techniques in an eco-friendly aerie.

The resort has consistently maintained a high level of cuisine, often quite formal for the laid-back Caribbean. In recent years the food has been considerably improved and modernized, with more variety and more healthy choices on the menu. In fact, Caneel Beach Terrace and Equator are two of our favorites on St. John.

Facilities:4 restaurants; 2 bars; pool; 11 tennis courts; fitness center; boating; deep-sea fishing; dive shop; kayaks; snorkeling; Sunfish sailboats; windsurfing; children's center; business center; room service; in-room massage; babysitting; laundry service; nonsmoking rooms; rooms for those w/limited mobility; afternoon tea.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
