Frommer's Review
Come here if you like mega-resort flash and glitter as opposed to the "old-school ties" of Caneel Bay. (Madonna would check in here; Walter Cronkite would prefer Caneel Bay.) This is the most architecturally dramatic and visually appealing hotel on St. John. The complex is set on 34 gently sloping, intricately landscaped acres on the southwest side of the island. It consists of 21 cedar-roofed postmodern buildings, each with ziggurat-shaped angles, soaring ceilings, and large windows. Herringbone-patterned brick walkways connect the gardens (with 400 palms imported from Puerto Rico) with the 1,200-foot white-sand beach and the largest pool in the Virgin Islands. Some of the stylish accommodations contain fan-shaped windows and curved ceilings. Most units open onto private balconies, and some have their own whirlpools. All bedrooms come with full state-of-the-art bathrooms. In 2006 and 2007 Westin converted 108 of their guest rooms into villas, the latter offering more space and a kitchenette.
Cuisine options here are more varied than those at Caneel, featuring nouvelle cuisine, buffets, and even New York deli sandwiches. Chloe & Bernard's is an excellent choice for steak and seafood.
