At some point during your visit you should eat sugar directly from the cane -- and an occasional vendor, some of them might be positioned in downtown Basseterre at the corner of Fort and Cayon Streets for around EC$5 (US$1.85/£95p), will sell you a stalk. Strip off the hard exterior of the stalk, bite into it, chew on the tasty reeds, and swallow the juice. It's best with a glass of rum. Tourist officials are quick to point out that the local economy is no longer based exclusively on sugar cane in particular, or on agriculture in general, but you'll nonetheless spot lots of flourishing sugar-cane fields, especially in isolated regions of (northwestern) St. Kitts.
