Downtown St. Louis has an impressive number of hotel chains ensconced in renovated historic buildings. Consider the Westin St. Louis, next to Busch Stadium at 811 Spruce St. (tel. 314/621-2000; www.westin.com/stlouis), which gave new life to a group of former 19th-century railroad warehouses with a gorgeous, contemporary interior; and the upscale Hilton St. Louis Downtown, 400 Olive St. (tel. 314/436-0002; www.stlouisdowntown.hilton.com), in the historic Merchants-Laclede building, with many of its original features intact (a former vault is now a gift shop). The most elegant modern newcomer is unquestionably Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis, 999 N. 2nd St. (tel. 314/881-5800; www.fourseasons.com/stlouis), located next to Laclede's Landing and the riverfront, with great views, a spa, outdoor pool, and Lumiere Place Casino.
