Frommer's Review
Luxurious, sybaritic, and spectacularly expensive, this world-class resort features Mediterranean-style architecture on a 2km (1 1/4-mile) stretch of one of St. Martin's finest beaches. The resort was acquired by Orient Express Hotels and made especially competitive with regular and massive infusions of cash. Since then, the resort has earned a reputation as a sleek, sexy, and stylish complex where celebrities sometimes come to hide out and unwind. Despite the price tag, La Samanna isn't stuffy, and in fact reminds us in some ways of the French Riviera.
Rows of mature royal palms enhance the 22-hectare (54-acre) property's front entrance. As you enter, you see lavish art objects from Morocco and Thailand. Regardless of their size, most units have private terraces. Suites and villas have spacious bedrooms with luxurious beds, fully equipped kitchens, living and dining rooms, and large patios. The bathrooms are simpler than might be expected, but they're well designed nonetheless, with bidets, hand-painted Mexican tiles, and tub/shower combinations. The fourth floor of the main building is the site of one of the grandest suites in the Caribbean. In 2005 the resort became even more luxurious when it upgraded the interiors of five of its deluxe suites, adding rooftop terraces and plunge pools.
Guests enjoy superb French cuisine alfresco, on a candlelit terrace overlooking Baie Longue. After dinner, the bar becomes a dance club. At the poolside grill, waiters serve food, St-Tropez style, on the beach.
