In its new location at Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Bernies remains an updated homage to the Trader Vic's tiki bar: a United Nations riot of Buddhas, African masks, Chinese paper lanterns, totem poles, Indian tapestries, torches, painted wood barrels, and transparent glowing tiki gods. The menu -- and clientele -- is almost as eclectic, from the island's best sushi (try the Tiki Roll -- salmon, tuna, and yellowtail topped with salmon roe and spicy eel sauce) to house-smoked hickory barbecue. The new Buddha Lounge, as the owners say, "may very well be the only place in St. Maarten where one can relax, chill out, and actually have a conversation and hear the other person while conversing." It serves food and drinks into the wee hours.
