St. Maarten's largest, glitziest, and supposedly ritziest gaming emporium, Casino Royale's splashy exterior of illuminated fountains and its huge multihued neon sign spitting lasers almost approximates the gaudy best (and worst) of Vegas. Despite the upscale pretensions, most people ignore the rarely enforced dress code (no shorts or tank tops). The casino offers games from blackjack to baccarat and more than 400 slot machines. The 800-seat Showroom Royale is the island's largest, most technologically sophisticated theater; its glittery shows change every few months, but generally follow the same pattern. Like a poor man's Ed Sullivan Show/Star Search, the evening might include acrobatics, jugglers tossing bowling pins and bad jokes with equal aplomb, and/or magicians with the usual large-scale tricks up their sleeves (including dismemberment and disappearing tigers). Upstairs is the island's loudest dance spot, the Q-Club.
