Chadafo Grill, in the Chesa Veglia Review

This is one of the most upscale restaurants in a resort that's loaded with almost-comparable equivalents. Owned and operated by the also-recommended Badrutt's Palace Hotel, whose mock-fortified bulk rises a short walk away, it's housed within one of the most historic buildings in St. Moritz, the Engadine-style Chesa Veglia. Originally built in 1658 of stone, stucco, and now deeply weathered wood, this antique chesa (house) retains much of its original paneling and carving, and a monumental arched entranceway that's often depicted as part of the press and PR for St. Moritz itself. Within its sprawling interior is a labyrinth of rooms (and three separate restaurants) whose decor is entirely composed of architectural remnants from older, since-demolished, houses.

Despite competition from two in-house establishments, the culinary and atmospheric star of this place is the Chadafo Grill, where impeccable service blends with an antique decor of high-alpine charm and top-notch cuisine. Expect a whiff of the glamour of faraway Paris, and odors wafting in from the kitchen. Specialities change with the season, but are likely to include chateaubriand, roasted rack of lamb with alpine herbs, shrimp with Pernod sauce, trout meunière, chicken Kiev, terrines of foie gras, and garnishes that include dollops of, among others, caviar.

The same building contains the two other restaurants, including the middle-bracket Patrizier-Stube, a casual dining spot serving Swiss and French food daily from 11am to 11pm. Main courses cost from 42F to 65F each. Less appealing is a simple pizzeria, Heuboden, which serves pizzas, pastas, and grills, but only at dinnertime, winter and summer alike, every day from 6:30 to 11pm. Main courses in Heuboden cost from 26F to 45F. Overall, we emphasize that the star of the entire complex is the Chadafo Grill.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
