Suvretta House Review

Set about 1.5km (1 mile) from the resort town, this five-star government-rated hotel is a citadel of subdued elegance and conservative charm. It attracts an established clientele with its grand decor and understated elegance and is slightly more luxurious than Badrutt's Palace, though it doesn't quite reach the lofty peaks of Kulm. The place is so formal that it's off-putting to some visitors. It was built in 1912 on a plateau surrounded by mountains and lakes. Its Edwardian facade has two neomedieval towers and a baroque central gable that has become the hotel's trademark. Except for areas of richly grained oak paneling and Engadine sgraffito, the interior is covered with plaster and pierced with an endless series of vaulted arches. The spacious guest rooms in traditional or alpine style are luxurious without being glitzy. The roomy bathrooms are tiled. It's surrounded with more land than any other hotel in St. Moritz and offers a private ski lift about 90m (295 ft.) from the hotel.

Facilities:
2 restaurants; 3 bars; babysitting; children's center; concierge; health club and spa; pool (indoor); 3 outdoor tennis courts (lit)

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
