Frommer's Review

This hotel originated in 1896 as the Grand Hotel des Bains. Sometime in the 1950s, it was reorganized as the Kurthaus Park Hotel, but since December 2002, after being ripped apart and rebuilt by Kempinski, it's the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains. Set at the eastern entrance to St. Moritz, adjacent to the ski slopes and ski lifts, it has welcomed the Sultan of Brunei. The decor is very grand hotel with lots of mahogany, brown marble from Sardinia, and local granite from the Engadine. This was the first of only two Kempinskis in Switzerland (the other, newer one, is near Montreux). In contrast to the Kulm Hotel and the Suvretta House (both of which have a distinct and aged clientele, and a passion about formality), it caters to a young-ish, hip, and urban clientele ages 30 to 50. The deluxe citadel offers sumptuous accommodations and living on a very grand scale. It has a casino, two state-of-the-art restaurants, and the best health, fitness, and beauty facilities in the area. Bedrooms are spacious and stylish, each thoughtfully designed and laid out for ultimate comfort, and each coming with a deluxe bathroom with heated floors in winter. The most luxurious living of all are the glamorous spa suites or the tower suites. The cuisine is one of the reasons to book here, with seasonally adjusted menus. Of course, not only can you get top-notch Swiss and international cuisine, but also superb Italian viands, many of the recipes "a secret" of cooks long ago.

Facilities: 3 restaurants; 3 bars; indoor heated pool; health club/exercise room; spa w/sauna and steam room; children's play area; car rental desk; room service; babysitting; laundry service/dry cleaning; nonsmoking rooms; rooms for guests w/limited mobility; casino
