Planning a Trip

Getting There

Stowe is on Route 100, about 10 miles north of Waterbury. In summer, Stowe can also be reached from Burlington or Montpelier (after some back-roading) via Smugglers' Notch on Route 108. This scenic pass, which squeezes narrowly between rocks and is not recommended for RVs or trailers, is one of the state's most scenic drives -- but is closed in winter (and absolutely packed in Oct).

Stowe has no direct train or bus service, but Amtrak's (tel. 800/USA-RAIL; www.amtrak.com) Vermonter service from New York City stops in Waterbury, 10 miles south, after a 9-hour ride. You can rent a car there from Thrifty (tel. 802/244-8800; www.thrifty.com) or call a local taxi or car service.

Visitor Information

The Stowe Area Association (tel. 877/467-8693 or 802/253-7321; www.gostowe.com) maintains a handy office at 51 Main St. in the village center. It's open Monday through Friday from 9am to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm in summer, fall-foliage season, and winter (more limited hours during slower seasons).

The Green Mountain Club (tel. 802/244-7037), a statewide association devoted to building and maintaining backcountry trails in the mountains, also has a visitor center on Route 100 between Waterbury and Stowe.

Special Events

The weeklong Stowe Winter Carnival (tel. 802/253-7321) has taken place annually, from the middle to the end of January, since 1921. The fest features a number of wacky events involving skis, snowshoes, and skates, as well as nighttime entertainment. Don't miss the snow-sculpture contest or snow golf, played on the (snow-covered) Snow Country Club.
