Stowehof Review

High on a hillside, this inn feels far removed from the hubbub of the valley. The exterior architecture has an aggressive, neo-Tyrolean ski-chalet styling, but inside the place comes close to magical -- it's pleasantly woodsy, folksy, and rustic, with heavy beams and pine floors, ticking clocks, and maple tree trunks carved into architectural elements. Common spaces feature nooks and fireplaces. Furnished without a lot of fanfare, guest rooms are decorated individually: Some are bold and festive with sunflower patterns, others more subdued and quiet. The smaller units are quite simple, like a country bed-and-breakfast, while fancier rooms have wood-burning fireplaces, wingback chairs, and air-conditioning. But one and all feature good views. The outdoor pool has a view of Mansfield, while the indoor pool building is simple and lovely, with a sauna and hot tub; the lodge is also next to Wiessner Woods, 80 acres laced with hiking and cross-country ski trails. Stowehof offers horseback riding and tennis lessons on the property for an additional charge.

Facilities:
Restaurant; pub; heated outdoor pool; indoor pool; 4 tennis courts; Jacuzzi; sauna; game room; business center; in-room massage; laundry service; dry cleaning

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
