Trapp Family Lodge ReviewThe Trapp family of Sound of Music fame bought this sprawling farm high up in Stowe in 1942, just 4 years after fleeing the Nazi takeover of Austria. Descendants of Baron von Trapp continue to run this Tyrolean-flavored lodge today, on 2,700 mountainside acres. It's a comfortable resort hotel, if designed more for efficiency than for elegance. The wood-paneled guest rooms are a notch or two better than run-of-the-mill hotel rooms, and most come with fine valley views and private balconies. Though they are slowly being made more upscale with thick duvets, Jacuzzis and fridges in some suites, and so forth, rooms here are not cheap; they offer access to nice facilities, but better value can be found elsewhere in the valley. The lodge also has villas and house rentals, although again these are steeply priced. Sunday concerts are held in the meadow in summer, a nice touch. | 2 stars | Frommer's Very Highly Recommended | |
| 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
