Publick House Review

This property is the high-profile lodging in the Sturbridge area. The most desirable rooms are the 17 in the main Historic Inn. Built in 1771, it's heavy on atmosphere, with Colonial reproduction pieces, quilts on some beds, and floors and ceilings that long ago settled into not-quite-right angles. A downstairs tavern with fireplace, used mainly by guests, is a jovial venue. Suites in the adjacent Chamberlain House are larger and somewhat more contemporary. The Country Motor Lodge, on the back side of the property, lacks any 18th-century personality whatsoever but has rooms that start at just $69, with cable television and access to a small outdoor pool. The same menu is offered in the tavern as in the more refined Tap Room, and a small "bake shoppe" does brisk business throughout the day.

Facilities:
2 restaurants (American); bar; outdoor pool

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
