Fishing -- Anglers will be in heaven in this part of the Catskill Mountains. Sullivan County possesses several of the best trout streams in North America; the Delaware River and Beaverkill and Willowemoc creeks are among the most storied trout-fishing rivers in the world, and the famed fly fisher Lee Wulff established a fly-fishing school here. The fishing season, which attracts anglers from across the globe, begins in April. Pick up a copy of the Sullivan County Visitors Guide for a full listing of lakes, streams, and fishing preserves in the county. The Catskill Fish Hatchery, 402 Mongaup Rd., Livingston Manor (tel. 845/439-4328), open year-round, is the site of more than one million brown trout raised annually. For instruction and guided incursions into the world of fly-fishing, try Catskill Flies & Fishing Adventures, Roscoe (tel. 607/498-6146); Baxter House River Outfitters & Guide Services, Old Route 17, Roscoe (tel. 800/905-5095 or 607/498-5811); or Tite-Line Fly Fishing School, 563 Gulf Rd., Roscoe (tel. 607/498-5866). Hiking -- In Sullivan County, there's very good hiking along the Tusten Mountain Trail, a moderately difficult but immensely scenic 3-mile round-trip trail maintained by the National Park Service. The trail head is near the Ten Mile River access site off Route 97 between Barryville and Narrowsburg, and the trail climbs to an elevation of more than 1,100 feet. For more information, call tel. 570/685-4871 or visit www.nps.gov/upde. A nice easy trail with great distant views is Walnut Mountain Park (tel. 845/292-7690), in Liberty, open May through September.

Rafting & Kayaking -- The rivers of Sullivan County, lacing the foothills of the Catskills and Pocono Mountains, are ideal for rafting, canoeing, tubing, and kayaking. The most experienced operator for boat rentals of all sorts is Lander's River Trips in Narrowsburg (tel. 800/252-3925); it has campgrounds along the Delaware River and rents mountain bikes (and offers combined canoeing or rafting plus camping trips).

Wildlife -- Sullivan County plays host to more bald eagles than any other spot on the East Coast, and the state set aside more than 1,200 acres specifically for the protection of the migrant eagle population of about 100 that return every winter. The Eagle Institute, Barryville (tel. 845/557-6162; www.eagleinstitute.org; weekends Dec-Mar), offers interpretative programs and guided eagle watches on weekends during the winter migrating season. Along Route 55A is a bald-eagle observation site on the Neversink Reservoir, just outside the village of Neversink. Guided bald-eagle habitat trails are found in Pond Eddy, with the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River National Park Services; the best times to see bald eagles are December and early March (call tel. 570/729-8251 for additional information).
